Research activities are focused on cell-mediated immune responses in autoinflammatory and autoimmune processes with the emphasis on pathogenesis
of autoinflammatory familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and autoimmune antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Ongoing research focuses on the characterizing of molecular
mechanisms that drive the abnormal activation of neutrophils and monocytes in patients with FMF. A primary objective of our laboratory is to uncover molecular mechanisms
of excessive activation and contribution of neutrophils/monocytes to the initiation of FMF attacks using in vitro models. Of special interest is the involvement
of altered signaling pathways in apoptosis of FMF neutrophils/monocytes.

Immunomodulatory role of stress and sex hormones in autoinflammation and autoimmunity
This project investigates the possible contributory role of epinephrine and estradiol on the progression and development
of autoinflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Specifically, we aimed to determine the effects of epinephrine and estradiol in the presence and absence of LPS on neutrophil
and monocyte activation in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
Role of mitochondrial uncoupling proteins in sensitivity to stress and apoptosis
The project is aimed to determine whether dysregulation of mitochondrial uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) and UCP2 in type
2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with mitochondrial release of pro-apoptotic factors and stress biomarkers.
